The Coca-Cola Company is conducting consumer testing for a new drink called Vio in New York. Vio, described as “the world’s first vibrancy drink”, is a carbonated dairy-based beverage brand and comes in four “natural” flavors Citrus Burst, Peach Mango, Tropical Colada, and Very Berry.

Nutrisoda, a low-calorie, sugar-free beverage by Ardea Beverages, recently revamped its packaging design. Although the soda was contained in a “skinny” can, apparently the solid and colourful packaging made consumers think it was full of sugar! In other words, Nutrisoda’s visual identity did not accurately communicate the brand’s values or product features.

Today, people pay more attention to the quality of their food, and look for trustworthy, natural, and healthy products. It may be assumed that pet owners are also concerned about the products they feed to their animals. This could be the reason why Pedigree, the dog food brand belonging to the FMCG giant group Mars, has recently worked on rejuvenating their brand through a campaign aimed at increasing “consumer” trust.

Gatorade recently launched a new packaging design for its bottles. In the past Gatorade was one of the leading sports drinks, but in recent years it has been loosing market share to brands like Powerade and other health drinks such as vitamin water. The redesign of the brand’s visual identity may have been an attempt by Gatorade to stop the shrinking of their business.

Is a product still the same without its packaging? As the saying goes – looks matter, and without a properly designed package a product is hard to sell regardless of how good its other attributes might be. Indeed, packaging design represents what the brand stands for as much as other elements of the brand visual identity do, and in certain cases the packaging is almost as important as the product itself. After all, what would Coca Cola be without its famous bottle?

Tide─ the popular detergent brand manufactured by Proctor and Gamble available in countries around the world─ recently changed their bottle design for a charitable promotion called “Loads of Hope”. The new design is noteworthy as Tide has not significantly changed their packaging during their sixty years of history.
