Pepper Lunch Malaysia: Brand Perception Research for Re-Expansion Overview

Challenge

Pepper Lunch was once a highly visible name in Malaysia’s mall dining scene, and it still carried meaningful familiarity among many consumers. As the brand looked to re-expand after a significant reduction in footprint, the key question was how to build on that existing equity in a way that felt compelling for today’s market.

This meant understanding not only what people still remembered and loved about Pepper Lunch, but also where the brand experience could be strengthened to support future growth.

Approach

Labbrand led a brand perception research programme to uncover how Malaysian consumers saw Pepper Lunch today and what would make the brand even stronger going forward.

The work included:

  • focus groups with existing and potential customers
  • exploration of dining habits, decision-making, and expectations
  • testing of different dining experience directions
  • assessment of the menu, shop design, promotions, and overall customer journey

What emerged was a nuanced picture. Pepper Lunch still had strong distinctive assets, especially around its signature sizzling experience and the sense of novelty and enjoyment it created. At the same time, the research helped identify where the brand could sharpen the experience further — from offer and communication to format and in-store cues — in order to better meet evolving consumer expectations.

Impact

The research gave Pepper Lunch a clearer strategic foundation for re-expansion in Malaysia.

It helped identify how the brand could:

  • build on the equity consumers already associated with Pepper Lunch
  • strengthen the parts of the experience people found most memorable and appealing
  • refine elements of the menu, messaging, promotion, and shop experience
  • shape a more compelling proposition for both returning and new customers

Most importantly, the project helped Pepper Lunch move forward with a clearer understanding of what was already working, what consumers valued most, and where the biggest opportunities lay for the next stage of growth.
