Splendid Heritage, Blooming Footsteps: Reconstructing a Heritage Brand Into a New Retail Space

LABBRAND has delivered a transformative retail solution for the Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory’s historic location at No. 404 Wanping South Road, Xuhui District. This marks the first time since the brand’s inception as the “Huigong Leather Shoe Production Cooperative Factory” in 1949 that it has introduced a novel, experiential retail format to the public.

Crafted by the LABBRAND Spatial Experience Design team, the project is built around the core design concept: “Splendid Heritage, Blooming Footsteps”. Within a compact space of less than 100 square meters, the team successfully resolved a double challenge: reshaping the perception of a time-honored heritage brand while experimenting a retail environment facing the future.

Project Background: The “Unanswered Call” of a Century-Old Factory

The heritage of the Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory dates back to 1949, when it was founded in Pudong by over 50 unemployed shoemakers. Officially named in 1960, the factory birthed household names such as “牛头牌” (litteraly “Bull Head”, here meaning men’s footwear) and “花牌” (litteraly “Flower”, here meaning women’s footwear), earning the title of “Shanghai Top Brand” for over a decade.

However, the tide of marketization in the 1990s led to a contraction of its core manufacturing business. Over time, public perception crystallized around the label of a nostalgic “heritage brand” rather than a modern “first choice”. Facing a younger generation that has limited knowledge about Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory, the enterprise desperately needed a spatial transformation. The goal was clear: avoid relying on nostalgia or purely selling antiquity, and instead reclaim the brand’s historical depth while demonstrating its readiness for the future.

Two Core Mandates for the Physical Space

  • The Unmanned Autonomous Shoe Store: Operating 24/7, featuring facial recognition entry, smart mirror try-ons, RFID-enabled shelves, and digital foot scanners. This tech-driven efficiency seamlessly adapts to the high-frequency rhythm of commercial hubs and transit zones.
  • Corporate Culture Showcase: Interweaving the narrative of the Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory with pivotal moments in modern Chinese history and Shanghai’s urban evolution, turning the store into a tangible, readable slice of industrial civilization.

Brand Leadership: Redefining the “Cultural Coordinates of Autonomous Retail”

An unmanned store can easily be oversimplified into a cold, transactional space driven merely by a “stack of convenient technologies”. LABBRAND first helped the Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory answer a strategic, foundational question: Why should a heritage brand born in 1949 launch an unmanned store?

The answer does not lie in chasing trends. Instead, driven by the vision of “reinvigorating brand vitality,” the project re-anchors this legacy brand within the contemporary retail landscape.

Brand Experience: Moving from “Unmanned” to “Warm Tech-Narratives”

The greatest risk in automated retail is a cold atmosphere. LABBRAND translated the brand’s core promises into a palpable spatial experience, ensuring that technology serves humanity rather than taking over it.

Design Concept: Splendid Heritage, Blooming Footsteps

Shanghai is the cradle of modern China’s leather shoemaking industry, tracing back to 1876 when Shen Binggen founded the “Shen Kee Leather Shoe Workshop” in the old city area. The Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory stands as an inheritor of this lineage, bridging the planned and market economies through the dedication of six generations of craftsmen.

“Splendid Heritage” (海上似锦) draws inspiration from Shanghai’s historic moniker Haishang (“On the Sea”) and the elegance of traditional Chinese brocade, subtly mirroring both the textures of fine leather and the prosperity of the city.

“Blooming Footsteps” (步履繁花) celebrates the path traveled beneath our feet—symbolizing both the physical footwear and the brand’s enduring journey through changing eras.

The physical space utilizes the brand’s signature red as its visual anchor, complemented by bespoke, hand-stitched leather sofas engraved with intangible cultural heritage leather-carving patterns. Every tactile element communicates a powerful message: This is not just another automated storefront; it is a tech-driven retail space that expresses the warm heartbeat of true craftsmanship.

The Spatial Trilogy: Heritage · Metamorphosis · Voyage

The brick-and-mortar store is structured into three progressive zones, tracing the past, present, and future of the Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory.

Act I: Heritage — The Century-Old Artisanal Journey

From the original industrial iron beds of Huigong factory’s early days in 1949, to pioneering the chloroprene rubber molded vulcanization process in 1960 (the iconic “765” leather shoe), to “Bull Head” and “Flower” obtaining National Quality Awards—this zone interlocks the history of the factory with the milestones of China’s development through a timeline, physical archives, and a miniature workshop.

The space highlights the historic honors and achievements of successive generations of master craftsmen. Simultaneously, it contrasts the traditional Italian Goodyear welted technique with the factory’s localized expertise, such as intricate leather carving and acupressure reflexology insoles. Avoiding both self-deprecation and arrogance, this curation firmly establishes the standing of the “Shanghai School” within the global shoemaking landscape.

Act II: Metamorphosis — The Live Theater of Autonomous Retail

This serves as the functional heart of the store. Customers enter via facial recognition, while intelligent shelving instantly senses when an item is picked up, utilizing RFID technology to seamlessly link inventory and payment systems.

A digital foot scanner completes a comprehensive 3D foot scan in just 3 seconds, and smart mirrors support virtual try-ons, allowing users to effortlessly switch colors and heel heights with a tap.

Act III: Voyage — A Manifesto for the Future Brand

This zone spotlights the Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory’s ongoing R&D upgrades and its long-term spatial vision. Through automated scanning, the space offers autonomous shoe repair and premium footwear care services.

It invites consumers to share their visions for the “future form of time-honored brands”, generating data that directly feeds back into brand iteration. “Voyage” signifies more than the evolution of products and technology; it represents a transformation in brand perception: from “the shoes of my parents’ generation” to “the shoes meant for me”.

Design Language: A Dialogue of Signature Crimson and Heritage Carving

  • Primary Palette: The brand’s classic red has been reimagined into a confident, striking, and energetic retail hue thought to captivate consumer mind.
  • Materiality: The custom leather sofas feature carved traditional intangible cultural heritage patterns. Every carved line reminds the visitor that even in an unmanned store, the presence of craftsmanship remains irreplaceable.
  • Illumination: The Heritage zone employs warm, targeted spotlights to evoke an archival, nostalgic atmosphere. The Metamorphosis zone utilizes linear, cool lighting to accentuate its technological edge. Finally, the Voyage zone adopts dynamic, color-temperature lights to simulate the dawn of a future journey.

Brand Influence: Turning a Historic Site Into a Gravitational Hub

True impact extends far beyond foot traffic and conversion rates; it is measured by a brand’s ability to re-enter the public discourse and attract an aligned community to co-build its ecosystem.

The transformation of the historic No. 404 Wanping South Road site is far more than a superficial cosmetic facelift. It is a systematic overhaul spanning brand storytelling, spatial experience, and retail architecture. While the 24-hour automated model solves operational efficiency, the narrative structure of “Heritage—Metamorphosis—Voyage” effectively immunizes the brand against its greatest fear: becoming obsolete.

When a young consumer walks into this striking crimson space, steps in front of a smart mirror, and tries on a pair of shoes that effortlessly marries traditional leather carving with advanced ergonomic technology, the name “Shanghai Leather Shoe Factory” ceases to be a mere footnote of nostalgia. It becomes a tangible, living answer to the future of retail.
