Did you know that Zong – formerly know as Paktel and then thus re branded after being acquired by China Mobile – is not the only Zong worldwide?
In fact, a Switzerland based start-up company operates a mobile payment business under the same brand name. The Swiss company has got hold of the zong.com domain too, which must have been a harsh discovery for the Chinese giant.
This brand mix-up was noticed and found confusing by Pakistani public. In fact, Pakistan based netizen wanting to go to the Zong.com home page are forwarded directly to the Pakistani Wikipedia page – whereas users outside Pakistan will be getting to the “ZONG – mobile payments” without many troubles.
Did China mobile try to buy the domain out? Did it fail to register its brand name worldwide? One thing is certain: having two Zong does muddle things up a bit both for users and from a branding point of view!
