As is the case for cell phones, personal laptops are no longer exclusively used by adults. Children now would like to use and even have their own personal computers. Knowing this, Disney and Asus have collaborated to create Disney Netpal, a co-branded netbook computer designed for children aged 6 to 12. The target market- “little customers and their parents”.
Disney Netpal is said to be fun, web-safe, and easy to use. It features kid-friendly software with Disney characters and a spill-proof keyboard. There are 10 customizable Disney themes and 2 colours (Princess Pink and Mickey Mouse Blue) to choose from. At the same time, the computer has more than 40 robust parental control options to ensure that kids are having a safe online experience. In an age of digital communication, this product will also help children learn computer skills from a young age.
Disney has always aspired to build their brand in the minds of children, and their partnership with Asus should allow them to do this even more than before. Although the target market are children, the demographic that will ultimately make the purchasing decision are adults, explaining why Disney and Asus have made sure this product appeals to both children and their parents. For Asus, the co-branded netbook will allow them to form a connection with consumers at a younger age, which could translate into long-term brand loyalty for second and third laptop purchases.
The Disney Netpal is available in late July with a retail price of $349.99. It will be interesting to see whether parents are supportive of the Netpal, and just how much these laptops catch on with children. If the child-friendly laptop becomes popular, it will build Disney and Asus brands in the minds of consumers, both young and old.
